General description
This mission aims to improve learning conditions in public schools in the City of Dakar, in support of its educational program. On the eve of the new school year, the Mayor of Dakar launched a vast program of weeding, decluttering, and cleaning of the capital's schools at the Amath Dansokho high school in Ouakam, led by the City's Directorate of Education and Inclusion, and announced a broader program of school rehabilitation and construction, which this high school is set to benefit from. The needs far exceed municipal resources. At the national level, the Ministry of Education reported for the 2024-2025 school year more than 7,000 temporary shelters, a deficit of nearly 48,700 classrooms, 5,862 unfenced establishments, 2,256 without water points, 7,033 without electricity, and 2,409 without latrines, with particular attention to areas with high demographic pressure like Dakar. In the Dakar suburbs, schools like Fass Paillotte, Médina Fass Mbao, and Sam-Sam 3 operate on a double-shift system due to lack of classrooms, some classes being in a very advanced state of disrepair, and schools themselves pay for their materials and electricity bills. This mission mobilizes the diaspora to complement the efforts of the City and the State: rehabilitation of roofs, walls, and ceilings, replacement of temporary shelters, desks, sanitary facilities, water points, electricity, and fences in priority schools identified with the City of Dakar.
Impacts / Objectives
Concretely improve learning conditions for thousands of students in Dakar, by reducing overcrowding, double shifts, and temporary shelters. Ensure safe buildings with water, sanitation, electricity, and fences. Limit dropouts due to poor infrastructure and support an educational environment conducive to the development of the city and its neighborhoods.
Contribution details
Donors and patrons to finance rehabilitation works, classrooms, desks, sanitary facilities, and water points. Engineers, architects, and project managers to establish quotes and monitor construction sites on schedule, before the start of the school year. Education professionals and NGOs to share their experience. Individuals capable of mobilizing funds, foundations, and institutions, and advocating for the most degraded schools.
Mission conditions
The mission requires close coordination with the City of Dakar (Directorate of Education and Inclusion), the concerned district municipalities, the Inspectorate of Education and Training, and the Ministry of National Education, as well as with the educational communities of the targeted schools.
