General description
In Touba, cleanliness is both a spiritual duty and a permanent challenge. Every year, before the Grand Magal, the organizing committee launches major cleaning operations, upon recommendation from the General Khalife: its sanitation commission divides the city into four zones, holds weekly meetings, sends emissaries to each religious family and neighboring villages, and mobilizes disciples, particularly the Baye Fall, with the support of Sonaged, Onas, and the National Hygiene Service. For the last Magal, Sonaged deployed 398 agents in the Mbacké department (two mechanical shovels, six poly-bin containers, and collection vehicles day and night), citing traffic jams and transport to the Bakhiya landfill as constraints. However, the challenge remains year-round. On August 21, 2026, after the Magal, piles of garbage were visible on the roads leading to the Great Mosque, and solid waste mixed with sand had obstructed the sanitation network, especially at the Ocass market, where traders had left their waste on site. Onas sees this as one of the main causes of flooding, while many residents live on shallow water tables or former lakes. As early as 2020, a partnership with GGGI and UCG planned for an integrated valorization center and a plastic recycling unit. This mission mobilizes the diaspora to transform the mobilization for major events into a sustainable system: neighborhood pre-collection, collection points, equipment, gutter cleaning before wintering, plastic sorting and recycling, composting, awareness campaigns for traders and residents, and digital monitoring of collections.
