General description
Kindia, the 'citrus city,' depends on its vegetation cover for its water sources, soil, and agriculture. The observation by the regional environmental inspection during the regional launch of a reforestation campaign on the Koukou springs (Sinanya neighborhood) in 2019 was clear: cultivation methods and chemical inputs, bricks fired on riverbanks, poaching, chainsaws, and bushfires degrade soils and forests and dry up watercourses. In June 2022, the Minister of Environment suspended the sand quarry in the Koliady 2 classified forest and ordered the backfilling and reforestation of the site, after observing that all trees had been uprooted to extract sand and gravel destined for Kindia, Conakry, and Mamou. In the region, a project supported by USAID also assisted communities living near forests and producers, with pineapple and orchard plantations, to introduce forest species and sustainable practices. This mission mobilizes the diaspora to support Kindia's reforestation campaigns: protection and planting around water sources, restoration of quarries and riverbanks, shade trees in neighborhoods, schools, and markets, communal nurseries, agroforestry with fruit producers, watering and protection of young plants, involving youth, schools, and associations.
Impacts / Objectives
Protect Kindia's water sources and rivers and restore degraded sites (quarries, riverbanks, classified forests). Increase the vegetation cover of neighborhoods through shade and roadside planting. Ensure the survival of planted trees through nurseries, watering, and monitoring, and create green jobs for youth by sustainably involving schools, associations, and producers.
Contribution details

Forest engineers, agronomists, ecologists, and experts in degraded site restoration to select suitable species and design plantations. Specialists in agroforestry, climate finance, NGOs, and service clubs to mobilize partners. Green economy entrepreneurs (nurseries) and communicators to mobilize residents.
