General description
In Kindia, electricity supply remains irregular: in February 2026, power outages multiplied during Ramadan and Lent, plunging neighborhoods into darkness and causing meat and fish to spoil in idle refrigerators. EDG explains that it is implementing rolling blackouts to avoid a general power failure, and points to the city's rapid expansion, the increase in subscribers, and fraudulent connections. Past incidents (overloaded transformers in 2019, the Samoreya substation fire after lightning in 2018) show the network's fragility. A structural response is underway: with the rehabilitation of the Kindia main substation, increasing its capacity from 15 to 100 MVA, EDG is preparing, as part of the electricity access project supported by the World Bank, the rehabilitation and extension of the city's medium and low-voltage networks and the reinforcement of the Donkéa-Kindia line, with 904 km of low-voltage lines, including 11,301 public lighting points. This mission mobilizes the diaspora to complement these efforts and accelerate the city's energy transition: solar with storage for essential services (health centers, schools, markets), quality LED and solar public lighting with remote management, smart meters to reduce losses, a pilot project on a public site, training of a local technician team and a maintenance contract, followed by replication neighborhood by neighborhood.
Impacts / Objectives
Improve the continuity and quality of electricity and public lighting in Kindia, and the safety of residents. Secure energy for essential services (health, education, markets) through solar and storage. Reduce the municipality's energy losses and bills. Ensure the sustainability of installations through maintenance, equipment security, and training of local teams, then replicate the model.
